IRT Theme Day at the Tonmeistertagung
Worlds of hearing: Audio offers in times of Smart Speakers, Audio Streaming and Personal Audio
November 14th, 10:30 a.m. - 5:15 p.m. (in German language)
Even before the Tonmeistertagung really starts, namely already from the morning of November 14, the IRT invites to its Theme Day. It takes place under the umbrella of the Tonmeistertagung and can be visited by every visitor with a valid admission ticket, but with advance reservation. In a media world dominated by an overflowing range of videos in all genres, formats and resolutions, audio offers are always a popular companion in all daily situations.
The IRT Theme Day at the Tonmeistertagung is aimed at audio professionals and hearing fans and is all about current and future audio offerings and their use. Together with experts, trends in podcasts and streaming will be followed up. Examples from research projects will be used to show to what extent audio consumption can be personalized and adapted to one's own hearing situation in the future, how the variety of media can be developed to distribute audio content and how smart speakers can be integrated into media use.
Call for Contributions
Play an active role in the Tonmeistertagung programme! The VDT invites Tonmeisters, sound engineers, artists, producers, scientists, publishers, enterprises and institutes to submit exciting lectures, workshops, tutorials, roundtable discussions, talk backs, demonstrations and other programme elements. Visit our submission portal and register as contributor in MyTMT! The Call for Contributions is open until the 18th of July.
AES Reviewed Papers
For the first time you can submit a paper for Tonmeistertagung and take part in an official review process. In cooperation with the Central European Region of the Audio Engineering Society (AES), VDT offers this time the so called AES Reviewed Papers. The contributor benefits from the quality feedback to his or her work. Another advantage is the fact that the reviewed paper is accepted as an official scientific publication. The visitor of Tonmeistertagung profits by the high quality of these up-to-date research results.
How to submit
Contributors interested in an AES Reviewed Paper have to register first in MyTMT. Then you log in and navigate to „Call“ where you can create a new contribution. There you select the format „AES Reviewed Paper“. We will contact you via email and send you more details how to submit the manuscript for the AES review process. Please note that the AES Reviewed Papers at Tonmeistertagung can be published by both, AES and VDT, in print, online and as PDF download. You as the contributor grant AES and VDT the right for publishing.

Europe's Second Student 3D Audio Production Competition in Ambisonics
For the second time, the Student 3D Audio Competition invites to listen to elaborate, high-quality productions in Ambisonics 3D Audio. This year, the award ceremony is facilitated by the Tonmeistertagung. During the show, the jury presents the nominee productions in an indeal 3D audio listening environment, announce the winners and hand out the awards. The portal for submissions to the Student 3D Audio Production Competition is open until end of June 2018.

Who can submit?
Students who are interested in spatialized sound, working with spatial music or spatial recording are invited to participate by submitting short works of 4 min length.
How to submit?
For submitting, please navigate to our Easychair submission portal and create an account, if you haven’t got one already. Then use the link “enter as an author ” to add your submission to the event and don’t forget to place a download link to your production in the field for the abstract. Submission deadline will be end of June 2018.
The required format to deliver is a 5th order Ambisonic track as multi-channel file in .WAV or .CAF that comply with the AmbiX format (SN3D, full 3D, ACN channel ordering). Please have a look at our Reaper template project (ZIP-file, direct download), which already has all the necessary settings and routings to create content for the competition. It represents a good starting point for producing Ambisonic content. The download also contains a PDF with more information about how to use the project.
In order to make the entry of the competition accessible to everyone, we chose the scene-based format Ambisonics as the required playback format. It allows playback on various loudspeaker layouts, so the jury is able to review the contributions using the 3D playback environment they are familiar with. Other 3D audio formats can also be easily embedded within Ambisonics. Additionally, binaural renderings of the 3D audio enable a comfortable distribution to a wider audience over the internet. Above all, there is a variety of free tools including DAWs, encoders, effects and decoders and many more for creating high quality 3D audio content.
In order to simplify the review process, please use the provided template session with binaural headphone playback and thoroughly follow the step-wise instructions below:
Use 5th order Ambisonics (36 channels) with the ambiX convention (ACN sorting order, SN3D)
only upper hemispherical content is considered for playback
44.1kHz sampling rate and 24bit resolution
Speech announcements (“front”, “left”, “right”, “rear”, “top”) should be used to soundcheck the spatial orientation of the piece
Room impulse responses of the target playback facility will be available soon
Duration of contributions should be 4 minutes maximum
Upload to an online file-sharing link the organizers can access
Abstract description of the work, title, contents (max 200 words, in English language)
Documentation of the work (at least 3 pages, in English language)
An international jury of recognized experts in the respective categories (spatial audio recording, computer music, and audio technology) will review the contributions. This jury will select works to be presented and discussed at 30th Tonmeistertagung (TMT) 2018 and communicate their selection to the authors of the respective works. As Europe ’s Second Student 3D Audio Production Competition is a main part in the program of TMT 2018, it will include public listening and discussion sessions in the evening with the jury and the authors of successful works. There will be talks during the conference announcing the listening sessions and summarizing the aesthetic discussion of the jury. If your work is among the selected ones you will be notified and asked to join the event and give a brief presentation.
Awards and presentations at TMT
We plan to award three prizes in every category to those of the participants whose works are outstanding in the respective categories. The award ceremony will also be held at TMT 2018 and the prizes will be sponsored by companies involved in 3D audio.
Eligibility and important notice
Authors of works submitted to the competitions should be able to confirm their enrollment as a student of a university or higher education program. Authors of the respective works will be asked to permit publishing of the works under the creative commons license (CC0 1.0). The idea behind the recording competition is clearly non-commercial, which should technically allow the interested au- thors to use academic facilities (which are strictly non-commercial).
