Amadeus - A geometric approach to active acoustics
PROD-2-1 | Beginn 13:30 | Dauer 30 min. | Volker Werner | Produktbezogener Beitrag (Englisch)
In a great concert hall it is not only about how much absorption, reflection, diffusion is introduced to achieve certain acoustic goals, but about their spatial relations to the audience. “Reverberant bubbles” in front of a listener create a lack of intimacy or clarity while behind a listener they help to achieve the desired spaciousness. This presentation evaluates strategies to influence the audible perception of acoustic geometry by means of active acoustics.
In a 50-square meter test lab 36 speakers and 12 microphones are evenly distributed to create a number of acoustic settings with different spatial properties. For evaluation standard ISO 3382 are measured and extended to 3D space. The results are also evaluated by a test group of musicians and acousticians.
The classic approach in active acoustic systems regardless of an inline, regenerative or hybrid operating principle is to alter typical acoustic parameters like EDT, RT60 or C80. Those alterations are achieved by designing a number of feedback loops between microphones and loudspeakers or by convolving the microphone signals with a specifically designed or measured impulse response. Even though the desired measurement results can be achieved with those strategies, they neglect the 3- dimensional nature of the actual pre-existing hall and randomly alter the audible perception of the existing acoustic geometry.
