Technology of High Performance High Resolution Horizontal Arrays for Live Sound

High resolution horizontal arrays (HRH arrays) intended for high quality live sound application make special demands on array technology. These comprise basic acoustic properties such as sound pressure level, high and low frequency sound reproduction quality, latency, vertical directivity etc. as well as control algorithms and signal processing. Other salient factors include the usability and reliability of the technology used and considerations of size and installation.
Array technology is characterized by several contradictory demands, making practical high quality systems difficult to design. Limiting fields of application is an appropriate method of simplifying array construction. This is common practice with standard line arrays or column speakers. Requirements increase considerably when advanced array functions are to be implemented. To maintain high sound quality, arrays must meet related requirements.
Construction of an HRH array system starts with speaker module design and includes audio electronics, power supply design, digital signal processing on several levels; it ends with the actual user interface and its connection to other audio equipment. The connection with the mixing console, the main tool of a live audio engineer, is critical. This paper gives an overview of concepts and technologies and details the integration of HRH array systems with other commonly used equipment in live sound applications.
Controlling Live Sound - High Resolution Horizontal Arrays, Sound Mapping and Use Cases

High resolution horizontal arrays (HRH arrays) are designed to overcome well-known deficits of traditional array systems. They also overcome traditional mono, stereo and multi-channel paradigms and therefore do not share the burden of their inherent problems. Well-designed HRH arrays provide extensive flexibility to adjust to the acoustic environment, remarkable control over sound distribution and exceptional sound quality for every person in the audience.
Mapping option, the process of deploying an audio input signal to the array speakers, is an important factor for the ability of HRH array systems to adjust to the acoustic environment and the audience. This paper deals with sound radiation of different mapping options of advanced HRH arrays and their benefits and drawbacks for live sound.
Application of HRH arrays is especially beneficial for venues hosting performances of critical acoustic and classical music. Small scale systems are also feasible. Due to the ability of HRH arrays to accurately adjust to the acoustical environment they are often a solution for problematic acoustic architecture. Examples of churches in Korea are presented that traditionally have a strong focus on musical performances as part of their services.
